About JB
JB has spent 30 years providing customer acquisition and retention consulting and production services to corporate clients. Corporate event production projects have included business management training for audiences of 50 to 1000 and entertainment productions with headliners like Jay Leno and Jeff Foxworthy for audiences of several thousand. These experiences, combined with his extensive experience in nonprofits, gives him unique insight to the critical production strategies that can measurably enhance gala performance.
Local Flavor?
JB recalls attending his first live fundraising event as a youngster watching his uncle in action as a tobacco auctioneer in Warrenton, NC where JB grew up. JB attended UNC- Chapel Hill and graduated with a BS in Business Administration. Over a thirty year career he sold and produced hundreds of corporate events throughout the U.S. but none that he more fondly remembers than the tobacco sale and his uncle chanting “the song of the auctioneer”.
Success
An established charity organization that provides diapers for children of low income families was challenged in 2018 when their primary diaper supplier abruptly discontinued supplying diapers. $100,000 was needed immediately to purchase diapers that had previously been donated. The organization’s 2018 Gala was fortunately in the planning stages and offered the best opportunity to raise needed funds. Historically the Gala raised $35,000 to $40,000 and while successful a new approach was required.
JB worked with the organization leadership and the gala planning committee to implement proven performance based strategies to increase donations. Strategy implementation included changes in the overall format, renewed focus on audience acquisition, fund a need appeal concept and delivery, establishing realistic stretch giving goals and encouraging 100% attendee donation participation.
Implementation of JB’s performance based strategies more than doubled the Gala net revenue and raised over $80,000 with an attendee increase of 25%.
The foundation CEO was petrified that introducing a live auction and fund a need appeal would detract from the foundation’s successful Gala. The foundation provides free screening for melanoma cancer and raises overall awareness about the dangers of melanoma. The CEO’s fear was based on a bad experience when an over aggressive approach to both the live auction and the fund a need appeal had made her uncomfortable and feel manipulated into donating.

JB’s approach to cheerful giving got her attention. Certainly there is a serious side to delivering a fund a need appeal and every attendee knows that a Gala is a fund raising event. So asking for support is expected. Giving however should make you smile. The level of giving should be “from the heart” and not in an atmosphere that makes any attendee uncomfortable.

JB worked with the CEO to craft a meaningful fund a need appeal and a fun live auction atmosphere. Yes, there were differences of opinion. But with JB’s experience and collaboration the CEO’s fears were alleviated. The live auction and the fund a need were very successful and contributed to the overall Gala proceeds of over $165,000, a new record.
